Research & Lab Facility Modernization
US Government Agency

A US government agency undertook a $461 million dollar modernization effort at one of its research and laboratory facilities, which included the construction of a:

  • 156K square foot Biosafety Level 3 Agricultural Hazards (BSL3-Ag) large animal housing facility
  • 637K square foot consolidated laboratory facility (CLF)
  • 100K square foot low containment large animal facility (LCLAF)

After experiencing a delay on the BSL3-Ag facility construction, the agency sought to proactively mitigate any risk of schedule delay on the subsequent construction of the CLF and LCLAF facilities.

Helmes&Co assisted the agency with schedule development and oversight for the design and construction of the laboratory modernization effort. This effort initially involved the development of scheduling specifications, which were later incorporated into the agency's contract for construction.

Upon award of the construction contracts for the CLF and LCLAF facilities, our team performed a detailed review of the contractor's baseline schedule on both the CLF and LCLAF facilities to ensure the baseline schedule represented a sound plan for construction.

Upon approval of the baseline schedules, our team conducted periodic contractor schedule reviews and the preparation of schedule impact analyses to ensure the successful mitigation of existing delays to the project's completion.

Helmes&Co's establishment of a robust and sound baseline schedule along with proactive schedule monitoring throughout the life of the project mitigated any potential schedule delays and issues on the CLF and LCLAF facilities.

Both projects successfully reached final completion on schedule.
